Aluminum Rivet Nuts | RIVNUTS®
Aluminum Rivet Nuts come in a variety of materials, sizes, and lengths and weigh approximately one third as much as their steel counterparts. Aluminum is a raw material used to make rivet nuts, also known as internally threaded nut inserts or RIVNUTS®. It’s a great choice when the requirement is a fastener with a lightweight property.
Common Aluminum Materials for Rivet Nuts
Aluminum Alloy 6061 is also Commonly Referred to as:
UNS A96061
AA 6061
AlMg1SiCu
3.3214 Aluminum
H20 Aluminum
Aluminum alloy 5056 is also Commonly Referred to as:
UNS A95056
AA 5056
Weight
Aluminum Rivet Nuts weigh approximately one third as much as their steel counterparts. Aluminum is good for automotive, nautical marine, and aerospace applications that focus on weight reduction.
Magnetism
Aluminum is made of non-magnetic material, manufactured using aluminum alloys such as 5056 or 6061 grade, which is the most commonly available for general purposes. Aluminum is most advantageous in applications where weight or magnetic interference must be minimized.
Corrosion Resistance
Aluminum offers natural corrosion resistance.
Use Cases of Aluminum Rivet Nuts
Aluminum Rivet Nuts are commonly used in industries requiring lightweight fastening solutions without compromising on strength. Their applications range from automotive to marine equipment, where their corrosion resistance and weight-saving benefits are highly valued.
Their lightweight nature not only contributes to fuel efficiency in automotive applications but also reduces structural weight in aerospace and marine designs, enhancing overall performance. In automotive manufacturing, Aluminum Rivet Nuts are used extensively in components like interior panels, where their ability to withstand vibration and provide secure fastening is essential.
In marine applications, where corrosion resistance is crucial due to constant exposure to saltwater, Aluminum Rivet Nuts are chosen for their ability to have good resistance to rust and degradation.
Nobility of Aluminum
Typically, Aluminum Rivet Nuts are used in aluminum applications. Occasionally, an aluminum rivet nut would be used in a steel or stainless-steel application, but that can bring into play “galvanic corrosion” due to the different noble proprieties of the materials. In an undemanding indoor environment, galvanic corrosion may pose less of a concern, but in demanding outdoor environments, one would caution putting aluminum rivet nuts into stainless steel applications.
The aluminum is less noble (more anodic) and stainless-steel is more noble (more cathodic). Aluminum and steel (especially steel that has zinc plating) get along better, as both are less noble (more anodic). A general rule of thumb is to use the rivet nut material that matches your application, but there are instances where they could be mixed with less risk.
This is a Reference Only guide to nobility. For exact noble performance requirements, users must complete testing of their exact application.
