Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts | RIVNUTS®
Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts are internally threaded fasteners made from stainless-steel alloys. These rivet nuts are prized for their superior corrosion resistance and durability, particularly in food-grade environments (like a deli counter) or harsh environments (equipment used near or in salty water). Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts are available in various grades, each offering specific advantages depending on the application’s requirements.
Stainless-Steel 300 and 400 Series Comparison Chart
Feature/Characteristic | 300 Series (302HQ, 304, 316) | 400 Series (e.g. 430) |
Magnestism | Non-Magnetic | Magnetic |
Corrosion Resistance | Outstanding, especially 316 | Excellent, (suitable for nearly all non-food grade, non-marine applications) |
Food Grade | Yes | No |
Common Applications | Marine, Food Processing, Pharmaceutical, Electronics | Construction, Industrial Equipment, Moderate Exposure Environments |
Durability | High | High |
Strength | Good | Superior Strength (ideal for structural uses) |
Hygiene Standards | High (ideal for sanitary environments) | Moderate |
Cost | Higher | More Cost-Effective |
Notable Grades | 302HQ, 304, 316 | 430 |
Weight
Compared to carbon steel, stainless steel is heavier due to its higher density but offers the strongest and most durable material for rivet nuts.
Magnetism
The 300 series is non-magnetic, which makes it good for electronics. The 400 series has some moderate magnetism left in the steel.
Corrosion Resistance
The 300 series Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts offer the best option for corrosion resistance, with 316 being the best of the best. This makes them suitable for wet, water, salt, and outdoor environments. The 430-grade Stainless-Steel, while less corrosion resistant, still provides great protection in less demanding environments. Stainless-Steel offers natural corrosion resistance, and its durability ensures long-lasting performance even under harsh conditions, reducing maintenance and replacement costs over time.
Uses of Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts
Because of their many advantages, Stainless-Steel RIVNUTS® are used in industries such as marine, food and automotive. The benefits of Stainless-Steel RIVNUTS® or Rivet Nuts include high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, proven durability, good fire and heat resistance, and better load capacity, which allows the connection point to be subject to higher torque levels without separating from each other.
The major benefit of Stainless-Steel over standard Steel RIVNUTS® or Rivet Nuts is the superior corrosion feature they offer when exposed to elements like water, salt, and heat. This reduces the maintenance required and costs associated with rust or exposure damage.
Stainless-Steel RIVNUTS® perform well in extreme temperatures, which makes them usable for applications where temperature changes affect performance in such applications as engines.
Nobility of Stainless-Steel
Stainless-Steel stands out with its superior nobility properties compared to aluminum and carbon steel when used in rivet nuts. Because of these differences in nobility, take caution when mixing materials in your applications. Galvanic corrosion may come into play when aluminum materials, for example, are mixed with steel or stainless-steel. Aluminum is less noble (more anodic) and stainless-steel is more noble (more cathodic). Unlike aluminum, which, while lightweight and cost-effective, lacks the same level of strength and corrosion resistance, stainless-steel offers exceptional durability and resilience. Its resistance to rust and oxidation surpasses that of carbon steel, which often requires additional coatings to prevent corrosion. Stainless-Steel Rivet Nuts combine high tensile strength with a polished finish, making them ideal for high-stress applications where reliability and longevity are most important. This noble material ensures a longer service life and maintains high performance in demanding environments, setting a benchmark for excellence in fastener technology. The best strategy is to use the rivet nut material that matches your application and requirements.
This is a Reference Only guide to nobility and for exact noble performance requirements, users must complete testing of their exact application.
