Top Tips for Rivet Nut Applications

September 13, 2019

A rivet nut is a specialty type of fastener that offers internal threads so a secondary material can be attached to the primary application. This specialty fastener is installed from just one side of the workpiece and is considered an optimal fastener choice when adding threads to thin or soft materials. Bottomline – when threads are required and only one side of a thin workpiece is accessible, a rivet nut is the ideal fastener. (Even if you can access the backside, many times a rivet nut is still the superior fastener choice. Using backside nuts/washers to secure the frontside bolt can prove clumsy and time consuming; rivet nuts require no backside nuts/washers.)

Standard rivets = no internal threads = permanent joining of two materials

Rivets are used to fasten two materials together, the two materials are permanently joined, they can never be separated unless the rivet is drilled out. For these reasons, these types of rivets create headaches for field service applications.

Specialty rivet nuts = internally threaded = flexible joining/disjoining of two materials

The internal threading of a rivet nut allows a user to attach and remove a secondary material from the primary application…unlimited reuse. Should a rivet nut eventually need to be removed, simply use a smaller drill bit than the hole size to drill out the rivet nut, the parent application material will not be damaged. Rivet nuts are the perfect fastener for field service applications.
