What is a Threaded Insert for Plastics?

Threaded Nut Inserts, What is a Threaded Nut Insert

Threaded inserts are precision machined metal components that are engineered to secure them into plastic. There are two installation methods that are used. In-Molded installation is when the insert is set before the plastic is poured and After-Molded installation is when the insert is set after the plastic is poured (this will typically create some plastic scrap or “curly q’s” during insert installation). These installation methods for threaded inserts into plastic provide a strong, tight, reusable bond that is permanent into the application. Threaded inserts are often used on thermoplastics or thermoset plastic installations in settings where the product is frequently put together and taken apart for maintenance or repair. Threaded nut inserts allow the proper installation torque to be applied without stripping the threads and ensure that the threaded joint is preserved for the life of the plastic assembly. These types of components are a perfect choice because the user can assemble and disassemble the assembly almost an unlimited number of times, without compromising the integrity of the threads! This is especially important in industries, like automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace and recreation equipment, where the application is a long-lived asset that needs to be maintained or cleaned on a regular basis. The joining process can also allow for a waterproofed seal, which is important in applications where the bond requires a secure seal from water, chemicals, or gas.

Types of Threaded Inserts for Plastics

What are the different types of threaded inserts for plastics?

There are many insert types to choose from depending on the application, material, and purpose. Different types can be categorized and sub-categorized into groups by either installation method, thread type, or features.

Bollhoff offers two product categories, IMTEC® and AMTEC®. IMTEC® threaded inserts are used for in-molding applications, which again means the insert is installed before the plastic is poured. They are perfect with thermoset and thermoplastic materials, as well as, CFRP composites. AMTEC® threaded inserts are used for after-molding applications, which again means bonded after the plastic is poured. They are perfect with thermoset, thermoplastic, or reaction resin materials (which includes filled or foamed). Spirol® also offers 5 types of threaded inserts for plastics. These are Press-In inserts, Heat/Ultrasonic inserts, Self-Tapping inserts, In-Molded inserts and Additional Alternative inserts. Spirol’s® Press-In, In-Molded, or Self-Tapping inserts can be used with thermoset plastic installation. While, Press-In, Self-Tapping, Heat/Ultrasonic, and In-Molded inserts can be used in thermoplastic installation. Rivet Nut USA, a division of Cardinal Components, offers all these options!

Rivet Nut USA offers threaded nut inserts in a variety of sizes and lengths, as well as, in various materials like steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum. Click on the links in this article to view more information about each of them on our website.

Advantages to Using Threaded Inserts in Plastic

Plastic applications have many advantages over traditional applications. When plastic is used in addition to metal, the combination creates the benefit of a low weight and high strength bond at a cost-effective price. They offer torque resistance, pull-out resistance, and are easy-to-install. Threaded inserts do not require welding and are more reliable (generally stronger than the parent material). They offer strong threads in weak or thin gauge parent applications.

Take a look at some of the specific advantages to using In-Molded and After-Molded threaded nut inserts with plastic material.

  • Shorter Injection Cycles
    • No wasted time! The component injection molding process takes place automatically without the need to insert metal parts. Safe production can also be guaranteed.
  • Low-stress Anchoring
    • High pull-out and torsion values! Because the plastic is heated during installation, as it cools, it creates a tight fit with low stress.
  • Reduction in Manufacturing Costs
    • Saves costs while maintaining top quality! The result is a wear-free, high-strength thread in your high-quality plastic components.

  • Maximized Usable Thread Length
    • Our components utilize a longer thread length and more thread connections than other brands on the market, which affords for a stronger bonded joint.
  • Corrosion Protection
    • The use of stainless steel (1.4301/10) makes your component durable and long-lasting because it is rust and acid resistant.
  • Component Cleanliness
    • Components are easy to clean and maintain (just wipe off!) because they do not absorb dirt easily. This ensures that your component will resist germs and bacteria better than any other material. Thus, keeping your component hygienic and sanitized, which is pivotal in an industry such as food and beverage.
  • Resilience
    • These high-strength components offer a high pull-out force thanks to the optimized flank overlap in the plastic. The benefit of this is that it provides high-mechanical resistance and energy absorption during a crash. A vital quality need in the transportation industry, for example.
  • Reduced Component Weight

The use of plastics has many advantages as it combines the benefits of the high strength in metal and the low weight of the plastic giving you the perfect bond!
